A growing world population , urbanization incessant , the growing shortage of good water quality and rising fertilizer prices are the driving forces of the accelerating trend on the rise in the use of wastewater, needs for agriculture and aquaculture.

Healthy causes that associate this practice have long been recognized , but regulatory measures were , until recently, on the basis of rigid guideline values whose application was often incompatible with the socio -economic parameters where most use waste water occurs .

In 2006, WHO published a third edition of its Guidelines for the safe use of wastewater, excreta and greywater for agriculture and aquaculture system. In four volumes , these guidelines offer a flexible approach to risk assessment and risk management related to health-oriented goals that can be set at a level that is realistic in local conditions. The approach must be backed by strict controls .
In response to requests from readers Guidelines WHO in collaboration with FAO , IDRC and IWMI produced two information packages with targeted policy briefs, working papers , fact sheets and guidance notes to clarify the methods and procedures. They focus on specific components of the integrated risk assessment and management of additional risk proposed by the guidelines.
The research project of the WHO / IDRC / FAO not options - treatment for the safe use of wastewater in urban poor communities was concluded April 30, 2010 . A final workshop in Amman, Jordan (7-10 March 2010) summarizes the conclusions and recommendations of this project , and a list of lessons learned.
